Professional questions & signposting

Multigenerational living can involve legal, financial, property, planning, care and health decisions.

Generations by Design does not provide that specialist advice. We help you recognise when it may be needed, prepare useful questions and approach the right professionals with greater clarity.

Knowing that you need advice is only the beginning.

One family decision may involve several different professionals. Questions about the home can lead to questions about ownership, mortgages, tax, inheritance, planning permission, accessibility or future care.

Preparing beforehand helps you explain your circumstances clearly, ask better questions and understand where one professional's role ends and another begins.

Property, legal & financial

Depending on your plans, you may need support from:

  1. A solicitor or conveyancer

  2. A mortgage adviser or lender

  3. A regulated financial advisor

  4. A tax or estate-planning specialist

  5. A surveyor, architect or planning professional

Health, care & family support

Changing needs may require guidance form:

  • A GP or relevant healthcare professional

  • Adult social care or an occupational therapist

  • A care-needs or accessibility specialist

  • A counsellor, therapist or family mediator

  • Other suitably qualified local services.

Prepare before the appointment

Useful questions include:

  • What decision are we trying to make?

  • Who will be affected by it now and in the future?

  • What have we already agreed - and what remains uncertain?

  • What could change through illness, bereavement, separation or financial difficulty?

  • What documents or financial information should we bring?

  • What are the costs, risks and alternatives?

  • Which parts of this decision require advice from other professionals?

  • How should any agreements or wishes be formally recorded?

Prepare the family conversation first

Before seeking professional advice, it helps to understand each person's hopes, concerns and assumptions.

Our resources can help you prepare questions. Coaching can offer thinking space when the family conversation feels difficult to begin.
