Our Approach

START WITH THE QUESTIONS

Generations by Design does not begin with the assumption that multigenerational living is the right answer for every family.

For some people, it can create greater connection, practical support and financial opportunity. For others, the compromises may be too great or the circumstances may not be right. Deciding not to live together can be just as valid as deciding to go ahead.

A good outcome is an informed decision - one that has considered the benefits, the risks and the views of everyone involved. That begins with better questions.

LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE

Multigenerational living is not simply a property decision. The right building matters, but so do the relationships, routines, responsibilities and plans that will shape everyday life within it. Generations by Design brings these considerations together through four connected areas.

THE HOME BY DESIGN Property, space, privacy, accessibility, ownership and adaptation. This includes thinking about whether the building can provide the right balance of connection and separation, both now and as people's needs change.

RELATIONSHIPS BY DESIGN Communication, expectations, power, fairness, boundaries and compromise. Families need ways to discuss different views honestly, particularly when one person has contributed more money, provides more care or feels less able to speak openly.

DAILY LIFE BY DESIGN Housework, childcare, cooking, pets, visitors, noise, shared space and time together. These may appear to be small matters, but they are often the things people experience every day. Unspoken assumptions can quickly become sources of resentment.

THE FUTURE BY DESIGN Ageing, care, health, capacity, inheritance, changing relationships and exit plans. Circumstances change. Families need to consider not only how an arrangement will begin, but how it might need to adapt, and what will happen if it no longer works for someone.

HOW GENERATIONS BY DESIGN HELPS

Explore honestly    We consider both the opportunities and the challenges. The aim is not to sell an idealised version of multigenerational living or frighten families with everything that could go wrong.

Include every voice.    Everyone affected by the arrangement should have an opportunity to be heard - including people who may be quieter, less confident or contributing less financially.

Make assumptions visible.    Families often believe they already understand one another's expectations. Structured questions help bring those assumptions into the open before they become misunderstandings.

Turn conversations into plans.  A useful conversation should lead somewhere. Our resources help families record decisions, identify unresolved issues and agree what needs to happen next.

Recognise when professional advice is needed.  Some questions require input from a solicitor, financial adviser, mortgage adviser, accountant, architect, surveyor, healthcare professional or another appropriately qualified specialist. Generations by Design helps families identify those questions and prepare for more productive professional conversations.

Review as life changes.  An agreement made at the beginning should not be treated as permanent simply because it was written down. Families, finances, health and homes change. Plans need regular review.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES
  • Everyone affected should have a voice

  • Fair does not always mean identical

  • Privacy is a need, not a rejection of family

  • Love and good intentions still need clear agreements

  • Difficult subjects are better discussed deliberately than discovered by accident

  • Professional advice should be independent and appropriate

  • Plans should allow for people and circumstances to change

  • No family should feel pressured to proceed when the arrangement is not right for them.

NO PERFECT FAMILIES REQUIRED.

Successful multigenerational living does not require everyone to agree about everything.

It requires openness, realistic expectations, fair compromise and a willingness to keep talking as life changes. It needs patience, respect and compassion.

There will be different views, difficult conversations and occasions when plans need to change. That does not mean the arrangement cannot work. It means the family needs a thoughtful way to work through those moments together.

That is what Generations by Design is here to support.

WHAT WE DON'T DO

Generations by Design is not a legal, financial, tax or property advisory service. It does not provide architectural, medical, social-care, safeguarding, therapy, counselling or crisis services.

Coaching supports reflection, communication and decision-making. It does not replace regulated professional advice, therapy, medical treatment or crisis support.

Where specialist advice is needed, we encourage families to consult appropriately qualified UK professionals who can consider their specific circumstances.

Our role is different: to help you work out what needs thinking about, what needs talking about and what questions you may need to take to those professionals.
